Course Description of Advanced Chinese Writing

1.       Course Name: Advanced Chinese Writing

2.       Course Type: Training course of Chinese writing skills

3.       Class Hours and Credits: 32 class hours;2 credits

4.       Teaching Objects: This course is appropriate for students who have mastered a vocabulary of roughly 3500 Chinese words and possess above-intermediate listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

5.       Teaching Objectives:

Students will further expand their vocabulary, grammar, Chinese character calligraphy, and writing styles. They will learn to apply their existing knowledge of Chinese vocabulary and grammar to writing formal and academic texts, with an emphasis on comprehensive and systematic writing practice. They will be able to express abstract concepts in formal and academic written Chinese.  

6.       Course Features and Expectations:

Students will further develop strategies for producing academic written expression, including how to transition between words, paragraphs, and sections; appropriate usage of punctuation; effective use of rhetorical devices; and generally improving written expression to meet the requirements of the HSK exam. This course emphasizes the study of a variety of texts in different genres and styles, including narration, argumentation, artistic reviews, letters, and reviewing previously studied writing styles. Students are expected to complete a rigorous body of written assignments inside and outside the classroom in order to reinforce learning.
